At the conference titled “Hıdırellez Bayramı” delivered by Dr. Naz PENAH, a faculty member of our Department of Contemporary Turkish Dialects and Literatures, the historical and cultural dimensions of Hıdırellez were thoroughly examined. During the event, valuable information was presented regarding the origins of Hıdırellez and the belief in Hızır and Ilyas.
The place and cultural significance of Hıdırellez in Turkish folk culture were explained within the framework of folklore studies, supported by various examples. The cult of fire, water, ancestors, and trees—particularly the cult of Hızır—were emphasized as fundamental elements forming the belief basis of the festival. Dr. Naz PENAH provided illustrative examples of how these cults are sustained through Hıdırellez rituals.
The conference also addressed Hıdırellez celebrations and motif-based approaches, the tradition of celebrating Hıdırellez among Turks, common folk practices, special foods and desserts prepared for the occasion, and the influence of Hıdırellez on naming traditions.
At the end of the event, participants symbolically tied wishes to a tree branch and to the branches of a rose tree. Through this practice, it was once again emphasized that Hıdırellez continues not only in oral and written culture but also as a living tradition.
